Many people are drawn to moviemaking because they have things inside of them that must come out. That is what we are going to learn how to do in this course, to translate the ideas we have in our head into moving pictures and sound on the screen. We have some story or idea that we want to express and we will be taking you through a formalized, step-by-step process to put the idealized concepts in your head into a concrete form that you can show to others. Our objective is to use motion picture and sound as a form of self-expression. Our focus is on the creative story-telling aspects of creating motion pictures.
Visualization is a common term that we will be using to describe the process of translating ideas in our head to a movie on the screen. We will be describing milestones in this process and how to arrive at each one. These milestones are the same regardless of whether you are working on a student project, a professional independent film or a studio picture. We will take you through this process from start to finish in this 10 lesson plan and familiarize you with the terminology, different roles and responsibilities, procedures, methods for creating a visualization and the industry standard for formatting and communicating your creative ideas.
So let's begin. Let’s first find the starting point of any project.
When approaching moviemaking for the first time, many people tend to seek out a camera. Although understandable, this is not going to lead to the desired end product. We are seeking to translate a story or idea from our mind into moving image and sound. We want to communicate with others and have some kind of impact on them.
We have chosen motion picture and sound as our medium of self-expression so it would logically follow that if you want to create images you would need a camera. However, the camera isn't really a first consideration or even an important consideration. The camera is just an object. It is the story that inspires and motivates, that drives the creator forth to put a team together and gather the resources, the thing that gives him/her the energy to push through the difficulties and obstacles that come from undertaking any worthwhile project.
